This feature, sponsored by News Wire Magazine, highlights the remarkable life of Calvin Schwartz—a man whose journey offers real-world inspiration for anyone seeking purpose, health, and lifelong impact.

Early Life and Education: Foundations in New Jersey

Calvin Schwartz grew up in New Jersey and earned two degrees in Pharmacy from Rutgers University. He began working in pharmacies at just 12 years old, setting the stage for a life built on discipline and work ethic. Despite his success in pharmacy, Calvin always felt pulled in another direction.

From Pharmacist to Storyteller

Although he worked for 12 years as a pharmacist, Calvin Schwartz admits he disliked chemistry, math, and science. Still, he pursued the field to meet family expectations. In 1981, Calvin had a life-changing realization: he no longer wanted to live out a story written by others. That day, he told his wife he was quitting his profession. Without a clear plan, but with deep conviction, Calvin Schwartz walked away from pharmacy and into a new chapter.

Transformation Through Adversity

In 1989, Calvin weighed 350 pounds, smoked, and felt exhausted. He couldn’t walk up the stairs without gasping for breath. On July 21, 1989, he woke up with a spiritual conviction that he was dying and needed to change. That day, he quit smoking, began a strict diet, and started exercising. In two and a half months, he lost 100 pounds. The transformation was not only physical but deeply spiritual. Calvin says this moment saved his life.

Casablanca and the Birth of a Novelist

Years later, while watching Casablanca, Calvin Schwartz had another spark of inspiration. In the film, Claude Rains picks up a bottle labeled “Vichy Water,” and discards it—a detail loaded with World War II symbolism. That moment triggered something in Calvin. He rushed to his computer and began writing what would become his first novel, Vichy Water.

He had never studied writing or English. But he realized that if he could write a novel, he could do anything. That book marked the beginning of his second act as a storyteller and journalist.

Teaching at 74: The Reinvention Continues

After years of writing, podcasting, and speaking, Calvin was invited to teach at Rutgers University at the age of 74. He began mentoring students, building relationships with Gen Z, and offering guidance to young adults navigating life and career challenges. Calvin says this new role gave him energy and purpose. He now regularly mentors students, meets with them at local diners, and gives back to the school that shaped his early years.

The Conversations with Calvin Podcast

Calvin’s podcast, Conversations with Calvin: We the Species, has become a global platform with over 500 interviews. From scientists and professors to comedians and spiritual leaders, Calvin has hosted guests from all walks of life. He views the show as a way to give a voice to those who might not otherwise be heard.

Some standout interviews include:

  • Mustafa Omar, a former pharmacist who became a diplomat and investment banker
  • Professors from top universities like Stanford and Michigan
  • A University of Michigan professor who regularly travels to Ukraine to document civilian life
  • Dozens of independent filmmakers, actors, and screenwriters through the Garden State Film Festival

A Healing in Jerusalem

In 2016, after years of chronic knee pain, Calvin joined his wife and family on a trip to the Holy Land. While visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, he entered the room believed to be the tomb of Jesus Christ. Forced to crawl due to mobility issues, Calvin spent several minutes meditating and praying. Later in the trip, while visiting the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, Calvin experienced a sudden and complete healing. The pain vanished, and he no longer needed his cane. Four witnesses were present.

Calvin shared this story in his writing and even wrote a letter to the Pope about the experience. While Calvin often references a broader sense of spirituality, this healing stands as a moment of divine grace that aligns with Christian faith.

Writing with Purpose: There’s a Tortoise in My Hair

Calvin’s second novel, There’s a Tortoise in My Hair: A Journey to Spirit, received the prestigious Kirkus Star for literary excellence. In the book, he explores themes of purpose, spiritual awakening, and social change. One chapter focuses on Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. Calvin had the opportunity to personally hand the novel to Reverend Wheeler Parker, Emmett Till’s cousin, bringing his story full circle.

His upcoming book, 10 Things I Learned from a Billionaire, will explore life lessons he’s gathered from unique people and experiences.

Health, Longevity, and Daily Habits

Calvin Schwartz practices what he preaches. Since 1975, he has avoided meat with four legs, calls himself a flexitarian, and avoids alcohol. He exercises regularly, reads 10 to 15 articles a day, and remains socially active. He believes brain health is tied to lifelong learning and intentional living.

He refers to it as “crystallized intelligence” – the idea that with age comes the ability to synthesize and apply knowledge in powerful ways. According to Calvin, AI will never replace the wisdom of lived experience.

Legacy and Impact

When asked about his legacy, Calvin says he wants to be remembered as a regular guy who became aware of something bigger. His mission is to help others recognize their own value, pursue their purpose, and stay mentally and spiritually awake.

He encourages people to take the first step, whether that means starting a new career at 74 or changing your health at 50. “You don’t need to have it all figured out,” he says. “Just throw something at the wall. Something will stick.”

Final Thoughts

Calvin Schwartz doesn’t believe in aging passively. He believes in growing forward. His life is proof that purpose, faith, and curiosity can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Through podcasting, teaching, writing, and mentoring, Calvin continues to impact lives around the world.

If you’re looking for a story of second chances, resilience, and faith-fueled transformation, Calvin Schwartz is someone worth knowing.
